When I first watched/read Twilight my first thought was how much it reminded me of Kate & Leopold. As a big fan of Underworld and Blade Trilogies I get a lot of fun vampires in my character list - but Twilight is like none of them. I realized that Stephenie Meyer did not set out to add another tome to the collection of classic vampire stories out there, but to do something very new and very different (note differences between Twi-Vamps and others, sunlight etc.)
Vampires in Twilight, it occured to me, was actually a way to bring an Edwardian Gentleman (no pun intended) into the 21st century to tell a Austen/Bronte-esque love story.
That would make Edward the Mr. Darcy of Twilight. Check the similarities. And where they are similar Edward has great appeal. He is a complete gentleman (rare these days-points for Ed). He loves Bella passionately and desperately (I have yet to meet a woman who does not want to be loved passionately-more points). He's super-fast and super-strong, and he has an Aston Martin Vanquish (jackpot :-D )
Ok problems with Edward -1. He is very self-conscious (chill out dude!) 2. He overreacts, sometimes in small ways sometimes in big ways (New Moon anyone?)
Verdict on Edward - Lots of very good qualities, anyone who is modelled after Mr. D can't be bad in my book, but needs to CHILL OUT. He's not a perfect character. And I think his flaws would eventually wear on a girl despite his immacualte good looks.
Jacob -
One word - Loyal to the death, Ok so thats 4 words. If you're with Jake you know you can count on him no matter what. For anything. If anyone has read my previous comments on the subject you will know that I was very suspicious of Jake until I realized that his motives were all good in Breaking Dawn, now looking back over the series I see how loyal and giving he is. He drags Bella out of her pit of despair in NM and it's not his fault that he is head over heels for her and wants her back for the rest of the series. He stands beside the Vamps in Eclipse and Breaking Dawn even though he hates them as a species, but you'll notice he is always there in Bella's time of need - no matter how much pain he's put through in the process.
Problems for Jake: Youth. Really that's his big flaw. Simple inexperience. He's never had a relationship before and doesn't know how to best fight for Bella when Edward comes back. Yes, the forced kiss was a bad idea (and if I were Charlie I'd probably have thrown him bodily from the house if he did that to my daughter no matter how much I liked him). Yes, feeding Bella's urge for death-stunts (which he didn't know was to bring Edward's voice I might add) was a bad idea, but that one I put on Bella, Jake was in it for the fun of it because that IS part of his experience. He didn't know Bella was TRYING to get hurt.
But really, cut him some slack. Furthermore with the Vamps, everything in his experience and instruction on the subject is - Vamps are evil and must die. But despite that he still warms up to them, showing that prejudice has not jaded him completely. (Note reactions to Carlisle and Alice in BD)
Ok one more compliment for Jake before I stop this extraordinarily long post.
He defies Sam and becomes an Alpha. Now I'm not downing Sam here but listen. It takes great courage to stand up to one's enemies. It takes even greater courage to stand up to one's friends. Jake proved then that he would stand up for what he believed was right, no matter how much it repulsed him, no matter how much his pack brothers (and sister) pressured him otherwise, and no matter how much his ALPHA commanded him. And that is an admirable quality if I've ever seen it.
Meyer has pretty much meshed Pride and prejudice, Romeo and Juliet, and wuthering Heights in to an updated series :) That's why i love the books i think, despite the fact Meyer is just starting out and her writing style may not be the best at times.
Edward is Mr Darcy updated, which i love. But he's also much more controlling and uptight....which as you say....despite his good looks, would have you planting a foot on his backside and sending his vamp butt out the door in no time at all .
Jake sums up everthing i love about men in general, loyal but fun and not adverse to some risk taking. The general take on Jacob would probably have been much better if we were allowed into his head earlier in the series.

Holiday" of course, acting opposite my favorite actress didn't hurt at all.

I think it works well for comedians to cross over and do serious or dark stuff :) Their comedy comes from a dark place :)

You're probably right, but you never know. She may get so tired of the series consuming her life (from the outside anyway) that she may eventually be willing to relinquish the series to someone else.

All i'm trying to say is that i am a Slightly Biased Team Edward girl and I simply feel that Jacob was a little too manipulative in Eclipse and i know he was in love with Bella, but really?? couldnt he have found a mature way to deal with it? Now, you KNOW I love Edward, but honestly, Jake is the best character in the book. He made NM and BD what they are.
He completely captures the spirit of teenage innocence and selflessness that is often overshadowed by insecurity masked by ego.

Go Jake, Go Jake, Go--- uh.. kinda.. teenagers can be remarkably self-absorbed also, but aren't we all at moments. I think Jake had moments of selflessness beyond his 17 years. I mean, would you have put up with Bella for that long? I would have been all, "Go find Edward since he's the one you want and don't come dragging your sorry butt back to LaPush when you wanna be warm.. let him be your sunshine now."
Who was it that said, "If you are young and not liberal, you have no heart. If you are old and not conservative you have no brain." (I think M. Twain maybe)
Anyway, my point is that while teens can be self-absorbed they are also usually the first ones to run to someone in need and give them the shirt off their back. Adults hesitate and over-think in those situations WAY too much, thus Edward's responses through out the book.

That depends on what you mean. If you are talking about the need for physical protection, i.e. uncoordinated, fragile. That doesn't bug me. Now this is really going to vary guy to guy. Some guys must have an athletic girl. I'm not one of them.
If you're talking in the emotional sense. That got exhausting. While reading Eclipse my wife's mantra was "Stupid Bella, Stupid Bella" and I'd have to say I agree.
Bella has her moments. I know SM took a lot of criticism for making Bella too weak, but I think there are times (saving Edward from suicide for one) that she really comes through. But all in all, I wouldn't want her.

People, thing about it this way. This is a girl who never had much of an opportunity to be a child. Meyer's clearly points to the strength she is to BOTH her parents. I many ways, SHE is their parent.
Edward gives Bella an opportunity to relinquish that role for the first time in here life. That's a difficult position. For anyone who has had to step out of a similar situation, being vulnerable to someone for the very first time in your life is not an easy task. In those moments, you see your weaknesses for what they truly are, and you convince yourself that if that person sees those weaknesses you've masked, they will despise you as much as you depise yourself. The beauty and honesty of love is that it takes weakness and resolutely strengthens it. And THAT'S what makes this love story great!
Bella's weak because she has the opportunity to be weak for the first time in her short life.
Remember, "Experience is something you get after you need it."
Lets not forget that Bella DID fight for Jacob where Edward was concerned!

Thank you! Thank you for taking this wonderfully imaginative series with its intricate characters and reading past its words to its heart. There are so many layers to this story that people never want to admit or discuss because it's "Young Adult" fiction (which, don't even get me start on that), but in all honesty, that genre is currently putting out some of the BEST literature than any other. (It's a shame that most people are too narrow-minded to give some of the YA lit. a chance.)
My mind floods with all the literaty heros and heroines AND life experiences that these characters reflect.
Bravo, Mr. Darcy, Bravo.
I completely agree with you about the YA fiction. And this one especially.
These are not stock/static characters by any means. I was actually having a
conversation with my wife about this the other day. How all the characters
go through major changes through the course of the series.
What I also love is the world SM creates. It is deep and can stand up to
criticism and scrutiny, like JK Rowling's wizarding world and JRR Tolkein's
Middle earth, SM's Twi-world is a place that you can jump in and let your
imagination swim.

But I liked that one for its noble characters and the sacrifices they made.
I know it was in the movie rather than the book, but I took a bunch of 8th graders to a packed show on the day it came out and the theatre was totally buzzing with comments, etc. SO Fun.. and when Faramir's father said he wished it was him that had died instead of Boromir, my class went nuts and some actually cursed and loudly gasped and some girls (and myself) started sobbing wretchedly through the whole silent battle scene.
GAH!!!! *sniffle* I think BD was missing some sacrifices in there somewhere.. The battle-that-almost-happened. *gag me*
Nothing is a good as a book which has a whole world that stands up on it's own, and you can just dissapear into and leave your real life completely behind :)

I am enough of a nerd that I read the Silmarillion and the Lay of Luthien too. Still need to get to the Children of Hurin and Book of Lost tales. I just can't get enough of Tolkein, brilliant!

I know! I remember reading "The Hobbit" for the first time in jr. high and thinking "ehh", and then going back years later and rereading it and thinking, "Man, I was ignorant!"
And stick it right next to the leatherbound copies I've already got. Those are sitting next to the paperback ones. : )
I think between that stuff and the different versions of the Twilight books coming out we could keep those publishers in business without them ever releasing anything new!

I like Jake cuz his personality is very similar to mine! He is playful, horny, and he stands up for what he believes in! A man who knows how to joke around is a BIG plus for me! Edward was somewhat boring, yet charming. I didnt like how Edward never respected Bella's wishes and always did what he thought was right.
I didnt want Jake to end up with Bella! Ed can have her! I wanted Jake to end up with me :)

I totally agree with you on the Edward being too controlling..he wasn't as blatantly obvious as Jake, but I don't appreciate being patronized and the fact that he was always arranging "babysitting" for Bella behind her back would NOT have been funny to me. The difficulty on the site is you can't keep track of who's logged on and who's gone off, Sometimes if you put a comment at the bottom of page it wont always get seen by the right person. Like me not seeing this one :)
Although i get around this sometimes by writing my comment at the bottom and then going up the post and replying to someone....saying look down there i left you a comment :)
If you want to get people to definately notice and reply it's probably better to comment back to something that thay have said as they'll get an alert....or get in early when there are only a few comments :) Or yeah...email :)
